Fifth Generation

174. Morris Cory1,7 was born on 17 Oct 1776 in Cortlandt Manor, Westchester Co, NY.8 He died on 4 Nov 1861 in Saltfleet Wenthworth Co. (Burlington Beach) ON, CND.

Lived in the Gagetown area until about 1819 then moved to Burlington Beach, Ont. In a memorial dated December 12, 1796 stated that he was 21 last month so the correct date may well have been November 17, 1775. Youngest child of Griffin and Sarah Corey, born Westchester County, NY in the area called Cortlandt Manor. Morris went with his Mother and the other surviving children from New York to Gagetown, New Brunswick, in 1783. Morris and Sarah lived on a farm on the northern edge of the village of Gagetown. Their seven oldest children were baptized at Gagtown on July 19, 1781? and their dates of birth were given in the baptismal record (Gagetown Anglican Church). They sold their farm in early 1822, the deed being dated January 8, 1822. Sarah signed the deed, but Morris could only make his mark. Born as he was so near the outbreak of the Revolution, and living in an area where there was considerable fighting, he had no chance for any schooling. One of the witnesses to the deed was Lewis Corey, who had to be their son even though he was only fifteen years of age at the time. He signed, indication that he had had some schooling. Not long after the sale of the farm the family made its way to Burlington Beach, which is in Saltfleet Township, Wentworth County, Ontario. Burlington Beach is a narrow neck of land which seperates Burlington Bay from Lake Ontario. In fact Beach Blvd., which runs along Burlington Beach, is now a Hamilton address. In a petition written in 1837 concerning a plot of land on Burlington Beach, Morris stated that he had resided on the Beach for nearly thirteen years, which indicated that he had reached that area at some time in 1824. (The petition itself was not dated, but a comment on it by a government official was dated September 11, 1837)
The record of Charles E. Cory, a grandnephew of Morris, contains a limited amount of information on this family, though some of it is in error. One definite error is the statement that all the children were born at Burlington Beach. Of the twelve children it is certain that eight, and probably nine, were born at Gagetown, New Brunswick. Charles E. Cory did have the names of all twelve, though he did not have dates of birth for them, and as might be expected, he failed to list many of them in their correct order of birth as determined by baptismal and census records. On 30 Sep. 1848 the the four young children were baptized at St. Luke' Anglican Chruch, Burlington. At that time the oldest of the four was nearly 26 years old, married, with three living children, and a mother-in-law who was an uncompromising Methodist. The parents of the four children were given in the record only as Corey and wife of Saltfleet, but without doubt the parents were Morris and Sarah since the names of all four were given by Charles. E. Cory as the children of Morris and Sarah. Morris and Sarah Corey were buried in St. Luke's Anglican Cemetery No. 2, Nelson Township, Halton County, 1382 Ontario St. The gravestone was errected by their son Frederick. According to the inscription, Morris was born 8 Oct. 1775 on Long Island, and died 4 Nov. 1861. The date of birth may be correct, and in any event is probably not far off, but the place was not Long Island, through the family did live in Queens County, Long Island from late 1778-1783. The date of death is probably in error since according to a St. Luke's record he was buried on 31 Aug. 1862. According to the gravestone, Sarah was born 7 Oct. 1785 at Gagetown, and certainly census records make the year appear to be 1785, but the date of death may be in error. The burial records of St. Luke's Anglican Church have the day and month of her burial as 27 Apr. though the year is not given. However, going by the dates given for burials before and after hers, it appears that the year was probably 1866.

Morris Cory and Sarah "Sally" Lounsbury were married on 4 Feb 1804 in Gagetown, Queens Co, NB, CND. Sarah "Sally" Lounsbury1,7 was born on 7 Oct 1785 in Gagetown, Queens Co, NB, CND.8 She died on 27 Apr 1866 in Saltfleet, Wentworth Co, (Burlington Beach) ON, CND. Morris Cory and Sarah "Sally" Lounsbury had the following children:

Lewis Dingee Cory1,7 was born on 20 Oct 1806 in Gagetown, Queens Co, NB, CND. He was baptized on 19 Jul 1818 in Gagetown, Queens Co, NB, CND. He died.

He was the son who witnessed the deed when his parents sold the Gagetown farm. According to the Charles E. Cory account, Lewis Dingee Corey left Burlington Beach and was not heard from again. The account did not say when he left, but he was not located in the 1851 census of Saltfleet Township. He was named Lewis after an uncle who had died at Gagetown before August 1814.
