Seventh Generation

619. Jeremiah William Cory1 was born on 9 Sep 1792 in Westmoreland Co, PA. He died on 6 Jan 1860 in Union Twp, Story Co, IA. Isaac Walker, and his wife Mariah Phebus, started to Iowa with five children. They had two die on the way there and a short time after they arrived they lost another child.

In October 1846 they settled in a trappers old cabin and stayed there for the first year. The cabin had no doors or windows. The only entrance was through the roof. They wrote back to their parents about the cold winter, Indians and about the opportunity to settle the new land with the rich soil. They told of all kinds of wild fruits and berries, wild life of all kinds, good water and good land.

Jeremiah, wife Dorothy, and some of the children came two years after Isaac. There were about forty in the second group, not all Cory's. In October 1848 Jeremiah and Isaac purchased the land around where they first settled and started the settlement known as Cory Grove.

The Church and a cemetery was started in 1850, there is still services and burials there as of 1991.
