Fourth Generation
19. Josiah Corey1 was born on 19 Apr 1762 in Plainfield,
Windham Co, CT. He died on 27 Dec 1836 in Plainfield, Windham Co,
CT. He was a private in the Captain Wilmarth's company, Colonal Warner's
regiment of MA. troops for 9 montth, 21 days and received a pesion of $32.33
per year beginning 4 Mar 1831. On 3 Sep 1842 the pension became payable to Abigail
Bracket, Catherine Corey, and James Corey, the only surviving children. From
his pension papers we have his deach record and despositions which verif;y his
residence in Plainfield, the that he resided in Adams, MA, when he enlisted and
for 14 years following. He never received a written discharge, but had testimony
of many as to his character. He stated on 30 Apr 1833 in front of the J.P. the
he was at Bennington and Ticonderoga. On 25 Aug 1838, Sarah deposed that she
was 76 (born 1762), that they had married on the above date at the house of Joshua
Dunlap, Esq., dec'd, that the witnesses were dec'd, but that they had been together
almost 50 years and raised a family. At the 1838 probate court hearing, daughter
Zipporah of Plainfield, age 50, deposed that she was the daughter and eldest
child of Josiah and Sarah Corey and that they had lived together from her earliest
memory until his death. We quess that Sarah may have been the daugher of Joshua
Dunlap shice she married at his home. Strangely, after the death of Sarah 16
Dec 1842, there were claims against her estate by Lucy Underwood, Sarah Hurlburt,
Lydia Tharp, and Abigail Hatch as heirs, but unless these are married daughters
of James, we have no explanation. Josiah Corey and Sarah Dunlap? were married
on 10 Dec 1787. Sarah Dunlap?1 was born about 1765. She died on 16 Dec 1842.
